Membership norms as specified in the byelaws of the Indian society of cinematographers

  1. Membership

    • Membership of the Society shall consist of Active Members, Honorary Members, Institutional Members and Associate Members.

    • Active Members - An active Member is a member who has been actively engaged as a Director of Photography and he must have demonstrated good photographic ability.

    • Honorary Members - An Honorary Membership in the Society may be bestowed on those persons who have notably contributed to the Society and the art of Cinematography or any other person who have otherwise fostered the advancement of Cinematography. An unanimous vote of the Executive committee is necessary to elect a person to Honorary Membership.

    • Institutional Members - An Institutional Membership is given to an establishment instituted and functioning for the betterment of the art and technique of Cinematography and those other establishments which are closely associated with Cinema such as Film Laboratories, Film Manufactures, Equipment Manufactures, Equipment Rental houses, Special Effect Creators, Film Development Corporations, Film Institutes and Film Societies.

    • Associate Members - An Associate Member is a person who is not a Director of Photography, but who is engaged in work that contributes to Cinematography through technical expertise such as Associate Cameraman, Camera Assistants and Students of Cinematography.

    • Membership Admission - A candidate for Active Membership shall meet the qualifications of this Society under section 5, and must be sponsored at least two Active Members. Said members must first submit the name of the candidate to the Executive Committee in writing, listing the candidate’s recognized achievements and general qualifications as a professional Director of Photography. The Executive committee may the request its Membership Committee to examine the application and return a recommendation of approval. If the Executive Committee signifies its approval, by a majority vote, the Active Members shall thereupon be notified by mail of the Executive Committee’s intent to consider the proposed candidate for Membership, stating the candidate’s name and address as well as qualifications as reported by the sponsors. A no objection vote from all the Active Members is mandatory for the Active Membership category. For all other categories of membership, only the approval of Membership Committee is needed. However, in the category of Honorary Membership an unanimous vote of Executive Committee is needed. All voting in all stages of accepting a new membership shall be by secret ballot.

  2. Membership Fees

    1. Active members - an active member shall pay an admission fee of Rs. 2000/- and an annual subscription of Rs. 500/- or a lump sum payment of Rs. 5000/- can be made towards an all time subscription fee.

    2. Honorary Members - No admission fee or subscription fee is collected from Honorary Members.

    3. Institutional members - An institutional member shall pay an annual subscription fee of Rs.10000/- only.

    4. Associate Members - An associate member shall pay an admission fee of Rs. 500/- and an annual subscription fee of Rs. 250/- only.

    5. Subscription is to be calculated from the beginning of the month during which the application for membership is accepted by the Executive Committee, renewable in the month of April every year.

    6. Every member shall pay the subscription before 15th of April every year. Members whose subscription are in arrears for over three months shall be given a notice requiring them to pay the arrears within a fortnight from the date of notice and the membership shall, ipso facto, cease from the date of expiry of the notice period.

  3. Suspension and Expulsion of Members
    Any member who in the opinion of the Executive Committee, is guilty of conduct detrimental to the interests of the Society shall be liable to be suspended or expelled from the Society. The Executive Committee, by a majority of the total strength of the Committee, after calling for an explanation from such members and considering the same, shall have power either to impose a fine, suspend or expel such members. The decision of the Committee shall be final subject to the decision of the General Body of the Society in the event of any appeal being made within 30 days.

  4. Membership Committee
    The Executive Committee of the Society shall unanimously elect a three member Membership Committee, who will have the authority to verify and recommend approval of any membership applications.

  5. Right to Use of Letters "I.S.C."
    Only Active Members in good standing shall have the right to place and shall be required to place or cause to be placed the letters “I.S.C.” after their names appear in connection with motion pictures, television or related media.
